Neonatal Surgery
Neonatal surgery is the most delicate super specialty of pediatric surgery. Neonate means the babies 1-28 days after birth. These tiny babies are completely different from adults. They are small, fragile, and more prone to infections and other complications. Surgery on these tiny babies, therefore, requires skill and experience to deal with the delicate small structures. The pre and post-operative treatment of these babies are also critical and contribute to the outcome.
Neonatal surgical conditions are mainly congenital (present from birth) but acquired conditions are also there.
Common congenital neonatal surgical conditions:
- Esophageal atresia
- Diaphragmatic hernia
- Neonatal intestinal obstruction from different causes
- Volvulus neonatorum
- Anorectal malformations
- Abdominal wall defects- omphalocele, gastroschisis, dystrophy bladder.
- Patent VID/Urechus
- Spina bifida with meningocele/ myelomeningocele
- Sacrococcygeal teratoma
Common acquired neonatal surgical conditions:
- Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)
- Neonatal torsion testis
- Breast abscess
- Infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS)
- Abscess/cellulitis
- Umbilical granuloma/polyp
- Ovarian cyst
